Matilda the Musical: Students Take to the Stage

Back

Before February half -term, talented students at King’s Leadership Academy Hawthornes took to the stage for a remarkable performance of Matilda. The show was brought to life by the school’s production enrichment group, consisting of approximately 30 students from Years 7-11.

Music Teacher Miss Elizabeth Burgess, who organised and directed the production, decided on Matilda as she had seen it previously and loved the energy and magic of the show. Securing the rights for Matilda in July 2024 set the foundation for what would become an unforgettable production. Over the summer, students dedicated themselves to learning the songs, and when rehearsals began in September, their commitment was evident from the start.

One of the most special aspects of the production was the sense of community it created. The students cherished the experience of working in a cast, collaborating across different year groups, and bonding over their shared passion for performing. For the Year 11 students, the production also provided an opportunity to take on leadership roles. Elizabeth and her team appointed a Dance Leader, Singing Leader, and Acting Leader, allowing them to guide their fellow performers while developing valuable leadership skills.

One standout student, Grace, choreographed several dance numbers for the show, demonstrating exceptional talent and creativity. With her aspirations to attend prestigious performing arts institutions such as LIPA and LMA, this experience has been invaluable in preparing her for the next steps in her performing arts journey.

Reflecting on the production, Elizabeth shared her pride in the talent and dedication the participating students demonstrated: “The students have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the show. There was an incredible level of commitment from all students who were involved. It was brilliant to see so many students develop and grow throughout the process of the musical. These students have gained a real love for performing on the stage, and I am incredibly proud of every single one of them."

With the success of Matilda behind them, King’s Hawthornes is greatly looking forward to its next school production! Auditions will take place during the Summer Term, during Enrichment time on Thursday afternoons. All students are welcome to audition, and the process will consist of three stages: Singing, Dancing, and Acting. The academy is excited to see what the next production brings and encourages all students to get involved in this incredible opportunity to perform, collaborate, and grow.
